Morrisons gives special nod to origins with heritage butter packaging to mark 125 years of fresh British food
Morrisons is celebrating 125 years since William Morrison started the business as an egg and butter market stall in Bradford, by introducing a limited-edition heritage butter packaging design – which was one of its first ever products.
From Monday 24th June, customers can purchase the Morrisons British Salted Butter for just £1.99 or two for £3.50, with an unsalted option also available. The nostalgic staple will be available for the next four weeks while stocks last, so customers will need to act quickly to secure their piece of history.
The heritage butter packaging features a Union Jack, gold wrapper and blue and red accents, celebrating Morrisons long-standing support for British foodmakers.
Professor Rachel Bowlby, FBA, author of Back to the Shops, The High Street in History and the Future, said: “Butter has always occupied a unique place as an everyday luxury food. Morrisons first customers of 1899 would have had their butter carefully weighed out by the pound or half pound across the counter. Without home refrigerators, it would have been kept in the larder before being brought out for tea. Butter was a special treat then and it still is now: perfect to celebrate this 125th anniversary.”
Today, Morrisons operates 497 supermarkets and over 1,600 convenience stores nationwide. Morrisons is as British farming’s single biggest direct customer and employs over 100,000 colleagues including over 6,500 trained butchers, bakers, fishmongers, cheesemongers, florists and other skilled store specialists.
Gail Paddy, Own Brand Director at Morrisons, said: “It’s a huge year for us and we want our customers to join in our 125th anniversary celebrations. The special heritage butter reflects our commitment to quality food making and tradition, bringing a touch of nostalgia to our shelves. We hope our customers enjoy this unique piece of history as much as we enjoyed creating it.”
The 125 year celebrations don't end there. Throughout the month, offers and activities are live for customers across the UK, including the chance for More Card members to become a More Points Millionaire and participate in the biggest ever ‘Basket Bonus’. Morrisons is also launching a £1m charitable fund to enhance community spaces across the UK.
