A white Rioja from Morrisons has become the only supermarket wine to scoop the top accolade at the 2017 International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC).

Morrisons The Best White Rioja Reserva was awarded a 'Gold Outstanding' medal after judges described it as 'perfectly mature' and 'extraordinarily rich'.
- The £13 own-label white was one of only 38 'Gold Outstanding' medals in the entire competition, which saw over 8000 entrants. Other winners included the high end Nyetimber Sparkling Wine. No other supermarket wine was awarded the medal.
- White Rioja accounts for less than 10% of the production in Rioja - a region in Northern Spain that is usually renowned for its reds.
- Mark Jarman, Senior Wine Sourcing Manager at Morrisons said: "We've worked hard to find the right producers to deliver a high quality product for our customers. The Best White Rioja Reserva is an unashamedly oaky white wine and anyone who enjoys a very fine white Burgundy, will love this - especially as it's a fraction of the price!"
- It's been a good year for Morrisons Spanish wines. The supermarket's The Best Oloroso Sherry picked up an IWSC Gold and their Albariño, Manzanilla and Palo Cortado all scooped silver.
- These latest awards follows Morrisons success in winning the coveted International Wine Challenge (IWC)
