Morrisons has been named ‘Supermarket Of The Year’ at this year's Retail Industry Awards 2021.
Taking the top title, Morrisons was praised for strong financial results that saw sales increase by 9% in the 12 months to the end of March, online capacity up five-fold with sales tripling, and the launch of the same-day Morrisons on Amazon service which rolled out to 50 towns and cities.
The judging panel recognised Morrisons commitment to future-thinking initiatives including a deal to supply the new Amazon Fresh stores as well as it’s Market Kitchen format, which offers customers the opportunity to have their breakfast, lunch or evening meal freshly made-to-order by a chef, at the same time as getting their groceries.
The judging panel commented: “It did a lot of creative stuff around the pandemic, including food boxes and telephone ordering for vulnerable people. It pushed ahead with things like store openings and its Market Kitchen initiative – which is a really excellent foodservice concept that can be used as a footfall-driver for its stores. Everyone should be applauded for their efforts during the year, but for me Morrisons was the stand-out.”
Claire Grainger, Group People Director, said: “On behalf of our Executive team, I wanted to say congratulations, and more importantly a huge thank you to every single one of our 106,246 foodmakers and shopkeepers. This award recognises the incredible contribution they have all made during a truly unprecedented and challenging period for the whole nation and our Company. We are incredibly proud of everything they continue to do daily for all those who rely on us.”
