We're working to help our customers reduce waste and increase what they can recycle.
We want every coffee pod to be recycled. That’s why we’re a member of Podback, the UK’s coffee pod recycling service.
Together Podback and Morrisons are helping more and more households across the UK recycle their used pods by offering free Podback recycling bags from our customer service desks and from January 2025 Podback recycling points will be installed in our large supermarkets across the UK.
How it works:
- Get your Podback bag. These are available at Customer Services, you need a green bag for plastic pods, and a white bag for aluminium pods. There is a maximum of two bags per customer. Alternatively bags can be ordered online from Podback. www.podback.org
- Fill the bag to the printed line, and then seal it using both the grip seal and adhesive strip.
- Drop it back at the Podback point in store.
Finding a store with a drop off point:
By the end of March 2025 over 400 of our stores will have modular recycling units that contain a Podback recycling bin. To find your closest drop off location you can use the Podback Recycling locator.
Within the recycling unit our customers will also have the ability to recycle other hard to recycle items like soft plastics, batteries, ink cartridges and vapes.
What happens to the pods?
Podback recycles the whole of the pod – there's no need to scoop out the coffee first.
Pods and bags are recycled here in the UK. Plastic pods are recycled in East Yorkshire, aluminium pods are recycled in Cheshire. The pods are shredded to remove the coffee, which is processed along with other organic waste to produce renewable energy (biogas) and soil improver for agriculture.
The aluminium and plastic get recycled into items such as drink cans, car parts and building products. And the coffee? It's transformed into renewable energy (biogas) and soil improver for agriculture.
